I ran across an old forum thread on GPF which blew my mind. I always figured a Lacrosse or Lucerne top swap without electrical wizardry was not a possibility.

I've always written these off thinking that there was no way to make them anything more than how they were sold and that's just too dang boring for me. However, a simple top swapped Lacrosse sounds like the perfect mix of fun, easy, and reliable to suit my daily driver needs.

So what does 3800pro know? Can I really just plug my HPTuners into a 3800 Lacrosse and tune it like any S3 Grand Prix?

I would email HPT to see if they mapped that PCM, yet. If ZZP is tuning it, it's likely, or they did some DIY methods to expand their business capabilities (we used to do things like that before CANbus computers made it a bigger pain, and most DHP tuners no longer worked).

I sent HPT a service request over the weekend. We'll see if they respond. However, it probably won't make a difference in my decision to buy a Lacrosse. Even if I was stuck keeping the engine stock, it would be a nice cruiser that fits my needs while also being able to share the parts hoard in the basement. I just wish that these things weren't getting so old!

Ya, I think they're not going to spend the effort for a handful of new customers, just to make a couple bucks from a day or two of paying their folks for digging into the files. If this were the DHP days, Charles would jump on it, but you'd also have to deal with the bugs galore in the software that never got resolved.

Simple solution would be some of the piggyback electronics for tuning, like an AFC if you even change that much, and sticking to basic bolt-ons. The stock tune has enough adjustment to deal with typical intake/exhaust changes.

use the engine and tranny in a mid engine 2 seater like Porsche 914. That's what I wanted to do with a 98 70K mi Pontiac Bonneville SSei 3.8 with the HD tranny. Makes perfect mid engine.
