Anyone ever heard of someone doing this or tried it themselves?

I would like it in red, so it matches the rest of the display.

Is the screen removable? or is it a seal case type deal?

If it's anything like the radio display, it'll be a thin plastic sheet glued to the edges of the display. some careful X-acto knife work should have it off, and then you can replace it with a new film.

Caveat: don't just use any old film. Make sure your material will hold up to moderate heat. A gel fliter from a stage light would be perfect.
