About the only time single timing chains make noise is when they get stretched beyond what the TENSIONER CAN HANDLE. Also, if the tensioner wears out this also will cause noise when it can't keep the proper tension on the chain.
PS, if this ever happens to you, and you are going to do a fix, replace it with a double roller chain instead of the stock single roller chain.
