Hi I'm considering buying a 04 Monte Carlo SS Intimidator with 127k on it. It seems to be very well maintained. I have very limited experience with these cars, but I'm moderately experienced working on all kinds of GM cars (mostly RWD). My biggest concern is the transmission. I will look it over and drive it before I buy it. Is $4800 too much? Is this too many miles? What does a transmission rebuild cost? Is it better to rebuild or is there a better option? It's a car I have always loved since I was a kid and would love to get my hands on one.

I always liked the Intimidator Monte's. I personally think $4800 is on the high side, but the Intimidator's seem to hold the most value out of any w-body car. The transmissions on these cars are good for the most part as long as you stay up on the regular maintenance & don't get into heavy modding. As long as the fluid is fresh, doesn't smell burned & shifts smoothly your ok. I would also check for any coolant leaks around the lower intake manifold, however at that mileage it was already likely repaired.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to try to wait and see if he'll drop the price again. I will almost definitely end up with a Wbody. I will not be modding. Taking into account what you already said. Would a higher mileage (160kish) be a viable option for a daily? I drive roughly 15 miles a day. I understand it's a case by case but I'm speaking generally.

Your welcome. I would personally go for one with 160k as long as its clean & well maintained. These 3800's are known for racking up the miles. There are many making it well over 300k. If that Intimidator checks out I would definitely try at least making an offer on it. If its a private seller I would go there with a cash offer in one hand & a little extra in another pocket just incase. Worst case maybe he'll meet you somewhere in the middle. From my experience if you flash the cash in front of the seller they'll be more then willing to accept your initial offer it or make a deal. I attached two KBB value charts. One for very good & one for excellent condition
