think of your motor as a big ass air pump. The more/easier the motor brings air in, and the easier and more air the motor can get out the better it performs, when you have too much air coming in and not enough goin out, this where knock starts. Knock also comes from too much timing, not enough fuel and others. But the big one is puttin too much air in and not gettin it out quick enough.
