I just brought home the donor car, 2002 buick regal GS. I remember reading that the buick regal computer would work well in this situation, and found a donor of the same year as my van. (buick was a total loss hit in the rear)

I probably wont get started on the project until this winter, but wanted to get started on the research.

If there is anyone on here that has done a similar swap, i'd like to ask, were there any major issues that i should prepare for, any custom parts i may want to track down? I have alot of reading to do i'm sure, but from what i have read, it seems i may have to do a custom wire harness, and change a couple pinouts on the plug to engine computer? would anyone know where i could locate wiring diagrams, and, does anyone know why i have to use the regal computer vs a custom tune on the montana's computer? if i swap the computer, will it work without a custom programming?

Should be a fun swap, the van is my daily driver to work an hour away.

thanks brian. Since i have the regal computer, which would be the preferred method, to use the modified montana computer, or use the regal computer? I am just going to run this engine stock, not planning on doing changes for power or such, just would like the stock 240hp vs the montana 3.4's 180hp.

does anyone know of a good place to look for wiring diagrams, thanks-pete

Any info on wiring? I'm getting ready to do this swap on an 02 silhouette and know what I need to grab as far as mechanical, just need info on integrating the harness. I've done a few LS swaps along with making stand alone harness for some of my friends . I also have hp tuners and do all my own tuning. I dont have access to alldata and having a hard time finding accurate pcm pinouts for the 3.4 and the 3.8. Any info on this would be helpful.

Post the years/models of your donor and receiving vehicles, and we can help. Not sure how active any of the folks from these 2012 posts will be, though.

Yes I understand about how active some may still be. My van is a 2002 olds silhouette and figured I'd grab a harness from an 02 3.8 impala.

Thank you. Another question, you wouldn't happen to know if when I go to do the tune to the original 3.4 pcm with hp tuners if I have to swap the operating system to one from a 3.8 pcm or if I can just copy and paste all the parameters from a L67 over to the 3.4 pcm. Or if it would be just as easy to grab a 3.8 pcm and just delete the VATS so it will run.

You'll need to put the 3800 file on it to make sure it controls everything properly (ignition module, cam/crank sensor timing, firing order, MAP/MAF sensor ranges... and a bunch of things I can't think of). You should be able to shut off any security settings, as you mentioned.

The wires that the vehicle needs to see should still be able to get connected.

Picked up an L32 and an 02 4t65hd trans with northstar tb this weekend and still unsure on the pcm. Do you know if I can use the comparison file from a 3.8 tune and just copy over all differences with my MPVI2 or do I have to do a segment swap? I've never done a segment swap but have used the comparison file to copy settings or even whole tune files over.....but it's always been on the same type of engines. I've only been tuning on LS engines. I know the firing order and other things are different between the 3.4 and 3.8. Just wasn't sure if that would work.

You'll want to run the PCM as a 3800 FWD from a '98-'02 supercharged car to give you the easiest method. PCM pin-outs will be different, so expect that along with having to move harness connectors.
