1969 Pontiac tempest L67 5spd?

3806 Views 22 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  grannyspssd
I have my old 69 tempest, been sitting for quite some time, but in a garage. i recently had a intake gasket fail at the track in my regal GS, spun 3 bearings. so my plans were to build the L67 block for my regal but i dont want the regal to be my heavy track car since the fwd auto's are expensive and its also the daily for my spouse.

My plans for the 69 originally were 350 pontiac worked over with twin snails, efi, and t56. i love the car to death and wish i had it for my own daily again so ive tossed thought around about the L67 longblock with a single turbo setup and a 5spd manual from a 3.8 rwd latemodel. the original plans were nice and somewhat different but this would still be fun and different and possibly cheaper as its a factory efi motor.

anyone know what all i would need to pull this off right?

shouldnt be too complicated... i would guess get an intake off one of the rwd 3800s too so your intake isnt butted up against the firewall. but aside from the obvious custom mounts and drive shaft i think a computer/wire harness from a manual rwd app should work just fine and then just tune for the turbo. needing all these parts from a rwd though you might be better off buying a wreck to get all you need and maybe even use that motor
Very good point. Glad you pointed that out. My next question would be is what all years come with the 3.8 and 5spd?
Fourth generation
Main article: Chevrolet Camaro (fourth generation)
A fourth-generation Camaro

The fourth-generation Camaro debuted in 1993 on an updated F-body platform. It retained the same characteristics since its introduction in 1967: a coupe body style with 2+2 seating (with an optional T-top roof) or convertible (introduced in 1994), rear-wheel drive, and a choice of V6 and V8 engines. The standard powerplant from 1993-1995 was a 3.4 liter V6. A more powerful 3.8 liter V6 was introduced as an option in 1995 and made standard in 1996. The LT1 V-8 engine, which was introduced in the Corvette in 1992, was standard in the Z28. Optional equipment included all-speed traction control and a new six-speed T-56 manual transmission; a four-speed automatic transmission was also available. Anti-lock brakes were standard equipment on all Camaros. The 1997 model year included a revised interior, and the 1998 models included exterior styling changes, and a switch to GM's aluminum block LS1 used in the Corvette C5. The Camaro remained in production through the 2002 model year, marking 35 years of continuous production. Production of the F-Body platform was stopped due to slowing sales, a deteriorating market for sports coupes, and plant overcapacity.

so from that i get some 95's and all 96-02 models
Wow. Thanks man, that shows me how ignorant i've been for 3ish years. I thought they really only made 5spds in around the 80's behind the 3.8 so this whole time i thought any stick i seen was an 3.4
good'ol wikipedia, i honestly didnt know when they switched. most of'em i see at the auctions are those 3.4's

i'll do my best. i just looked around for a camaro wrecked near me and all auto's. found a couple long distance ones but ones in tx and others in maryland.
Don't forget firebirds too man, I would guess same yeArs apply but not sure...
Yeah i didn't find any birds on the sites that list both the sales and auctions. Must have been an uncommon option. Wouldn't doubt it cause its usually women who bought the V6 birds and camaros and rarely will they get a real trans for one.
check craigslist, i see'em on there all the time... and if your willing to travel a little bit use craiglook.com its still craigslist but you can set it to search up to 250 miles out and search all the other local cities from one site
and since your in ohio you might get ahold of ed morad and tell him what your looking for.... he deals with a LOT of 3800 powered cars, not sure if he does rwd but i know he runs a yard and might be able to help track one down. hes a sponsor here too click that morad parts co logo off to the left here
Yeah i've delt with morad. I've bought small parts from him i think 2 or 3 times. Only prices i don't like they have are on engines. I probably would have bought one from them for my regal if they didn't want 2500 for a l67/trans that had 90k on it. Got mine from a wrecked bonne at pull and pay for 260. Sadly a guy was taking the blower when i got there but i got what i needed and it was super clean for 98.
there are also adaptor plates to use any chevy trans behind a 3800 , triple edge did a 2004r behind a turbo'ed 3800 in a GN , I do some tuning on a rock crawler with a L67 bolted to a 7004r using a $75 adaptor plate and some fabrication to make it work

you can run a glide ,t350 ,t400 or any stick trans that fits sbc or you can run some sticks that bolt up also from 2.8 s10's ,isuzu pickups , some dakotas , I am not clear on exact cross references but I have seen these options posted before

i would sell the gtp and use the money buy ya a nice 350 setup... and i think those s10's had the option for the 350 you should be able to find trans an engine parts galore at the salvage. but if you wanna its gonna be a custon intake adapter at the least since it will put the fwd inlet dirrectly into you rwd firewall, you should look at some of the bird/camaro guys that have done l67 swaps for rwd setup info.

thats one sick rock crawler!!!

any luck finding a wreck grannyspeed? hows the project coming?
ok thanks i was thinkin bout a 350 but iv never seen a 3800 in a s10 at mini truck shows and it would just be very custom and catch alot of ppls eye with the motor and dash out of that car in a s10 but thanks alot like i said im new too forums and its hard 4 me too figure out where too ask ppl at
