My '04 Regal has ~125k and was bought from the 2nd owner and is a very nice car which I plan on keeping. In the past 6 months the car shut off while driving 3 or 4 times, each time while I was going slow. All the lights on the dashboard lit up but if I shifted to neutral it started right up again. It seemed to be happening in very humid weather when I used the AC to defog the windshield.

About a week ago it shut off again in the exact same place on the exact same road while making a right turn. It then hit occurred to me that I had signaled for a right turn both times when the car immediately shut off. I pulled into a parking lot and was able to shut the engine off 3 times in a row by using the turn signal lever to indicate a right turn. It seemed to be only a right turn but after many tries driving around in the empty lot it shut the car off many times using the blinker for a left AND a right turn.

Once again, when the engine shuts off all of the dash lights come on similar to when the key is first turned to 'ON' before proceeding to 'START'.

My only thought is the turn signal stalk/ switch is worn and somehow shorting to ground although I don't see how it could ground out the coil and shut down the engine.

My plan is to pay the dealer to replace the turn signal assembly and while they're at it, the ignition switch also. Electrical problems are a nightmare and I don't want to mess with the steering wheel and airbag removal, etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated in that I really shouldn't be driving the car without turn signals.

Thanks, Mark

Inspect your wire harness under the hood for any damage. I had issues where the car shut off. Once it was the harness to the cam sensor was damaged by contacting the crank pulley. And once I had wires in the back touching the headers.

Hey Mickey, did you ever get this sorted?
You were absolutely on the right track. When the whole dash lights up like a Christmas tree when using the multi-function switch (lovingly referred to by some as the "malfunction switch" it's definitely on it's way out. And if it's not taken care of quickly will turn into what you experienced, like turning off the ignition switch. My first one waited about a month to start killing the engine, while my second one only took about a week between the first hint of a problem and the engine dying when activating the turn signals.

I now replace both the turn signal switch AND the ignition switch (called the "ignition harness" usually) at the same time. Because I'm already in there and you need to disconnect them both down under the dash anyway. I came to this conclusion also because I figured it had to be ignition switch related (to kill a running engine) even though it was happening when using the turn signals.
I also buy AC Delco now too, after having tried six different brands of multi-function switch and three different ignition switches and none of them feeling like the original. Only the AC Delcos felt smooth and sure like the originals. The ignition switches were so bad that two of them didn't even work with standard key lengths!

By the way. This usually occurs about every 70k to 80k miles. My first one went out at around 75-80k miles and my second one more recently at 160-165k. Pretty much the same as the wheel bearings. My originals were shot at 65k while my second set (all cheap imported stuff) lasted just about 100k miles.
This time I bought three of the cheap ones off of Amazon and one Timkin. Might not have the vehicle long enough to test them fully, but interested to see which ones last longer than the othes.

Sorry for the long-winded message, but thought you'd like to know about the switch experience of others. And that if you haven't already, you might need new wheel bearings soon too.

Paul
