It ONLY shifts DOWN!!!!
here are my test results:
With the engine off:
From Park I can move the shifter all the way to 1st and the gear selector lever on the tranny actually goes to 1st.
If the gear selector on the tranny is in 1st (and so is my shifter) I try to move it to park, the tranny will stay in 1st.
Is the shifter pushrod bent or something???
In a nutshell: It will only shift from Park -> Neutral -> OD -> 3 -> 2 -> 1st
but it wont do the opposite!

actually i think that there is something wrong in the manual valve bore of the valvebody or that you may have an issue with the shifter on the column [or s poor/siezed interlock cable.
checking information that i have on 4l80e guess it would also help if i knew what i was trying to diag.

column shift or console shift? never mind
sounds like to me you have a problem with the shift interlock cable... it may be out of adjustment also...
the cable can be binding itself or you may be having an issue with the park lock brake solenoid [foot on brake to shift]
the fact that you can go under and manually shift it to park or anyother gear leads me to suspect that you have a problem with the cable binding... check for abnormal [high angle/sharp 180] bends... take the cable loose at the shifter and check to see if it moves freely when disconnected from the trans external mounting point... if the cable disconnected from both ends is free... then your problem is in the interlock soleniod.

Hey Jon, I think you may have pinched it when you set the motor back in.

let me get this straight...
peas to peas not peas to bacon
you can go under the auto put it in any position PRNDL and you get 1st gear...
even in park&Neutral you get 1st gear?
