NEW PB for BADSSEI! Also, a story and pics!
I raced BADSSEI twice since I ran 10.7 at Dragway 41 in IN a few weeks ago. The time out I ran 10.7 5 times, all around 125 MPH, but no new PB.
Last Friday (second time out since first 10.7 PB) I ran at a test and tune before NOPI world nationals. I hit another 1.51 60' and got a new best of 10.711@125.71 MPH (1.548 60') The car has now made 10-12 10.7 passes and all passes are in the 10's. I am very happy with the way the car has been performing. I have been running around 20-22* timing w/ 27-29lbs of boost (depending on belt/weather) and the car has had no head gasket issues in the last 15 runs and 10 dyno pulls (basically all I raced it this year). Also have to say that I am not revving as high this year. What a change over last year with running too much timing, revving way high, intercooler pump relays failing etc... Couldnt be happier with the car performance. The short term fix for the belt issue was just changing the idler sizes (new 4" idler and running a smaller ribbed 3" to get more wrap on the blower pulley) and also running a new belt every pass, no exceptions. Extreme yes, but...
Here is where the story takes a turn: The track prep was great and there were alot of 6 and 7 second cars laying down some nice rubber in front of us. There were only 10-15 cars racing all day with world class track prep ($65 test and tune charge). It was the best day of racing you could ask for. no lines, best prep ever. I laid down a 1.51 launch and then Scott ran a 1.50 launch. It seemed we were having a little competition. The bonne has alot more down low and I figured I would try and beat him to the 1.4's since I had been feathering the car some and not stalling it up much at all for the 1.51. I did a nice burnout, stalled up the car to 4000-4200 ish, as much as the brakes would hold, then mashed it to the floor as soon as I felt the brakes couldnt hold anymore. I dont think I moved an inch. lol We pushed it back to the pits and found I broke the driverside axle, snapped the stock OUPUT SHAFT, and shredded the pass side axle boot.
Luckily, I had both axles, a stock output shaft, and air tools. I was running a stock diff that already had a handful or big burnouts with the monster 28" slicks, so I replaced it with another stocker since I didnt have a new beta gen3 yet. Jamie from Hoosier performance and myself got the car apart and got it all back together and ready to run again.(thanks again Jamie) Long story short, same thing happened again, this time also going balls to the wall. BTW, thanks to Jamie, Rob, Todd, Dave for all the help at the track. As always, a huge thanks to Scott for trusting me with the beast he has built.
Eric from Dynotech believes that there must be something binding the axle/output shaft for something like that to happen. He suggested adding limiters to the control arms like JT has. The bonne has different aluminum control arms, so that wasnt addressed like the turbo car did with the custom control arms. The eco tec car with 1200hp runs the stock shaft I was told by Eric. It is obvious there is an issue that needs addressed.
For that reason, I am not going to race at MGM this year. The car runs 10.7 or so every pass. It isnt worth the rat race to get it back together unresolved just to launch light 1.5 60's and rip off 10.7's. I know Stanton has great air and it could run 10.5-10.6, but nonetheles I prefer to let the car sit until we have time to fix it properly and I can drive hard. I wont be as stressed trying to get ready to race, will have more room for parts in my trailer, and will have as much or more fun at the races helping others with their cars and beating up on other peoples cars when I get asked to drive for them (going to print waivers ).
It was funny when Rob came up to me and asked me to drive his car after I had already broke the bonne twice. I said "Are you sure?"
Sorry to those that wanted to see the car run in person. If anyone needs me to bring them things to MGM, I now have more room. I will also have as many parts as I think will help in case someone has a problem at the track. Will also have any tools needed to compelte the job. See everyone there.
The last picture is to show the axle internal size difference between a GTP and an SSEI. HUGE difference FWIW
Hopefully Todd has some video of the runs I made.

Congratulations again Ed! It's amazing that a Bonneville has been in the top five for three and a half years now. Currently ranked #3 of all 3800 FWD cars, the Bad SSEi was ranked #1 briefly (for about an hour and a half) when it was first to crack the 12.50-second barrier in the May 2002.

All of us are quite happy with the way the car's been performing, and the way you've been hammering on it, er I mean 'driving' it.

I agree. With a little better air, some unbelieveable numbers would have been possible.

Gotta love healthy competition! This is one of the things that keeps me motivated - having fun at the race track And with all that's happened this year, sometimes it's easy to forget your roots...

Yes, BIG thanks to everyone who helped out - especially Jamie Early (Rob's personal mechanic )!

As much as I'd like to take the credit, I believe Tim King is the one who deserves most of it. When he assembles an engine or tranny, no details get overlooked, ever. Being able to rely on his work has been a huge asset for INTENSE and our customers/friends. I will take a little credit for the tuning though.

Yes, that's exactly right. G.M. still runs stock output shafts, and we've recently switched back to stock output shafts in all of ours as well.
Congratulations again Ed! You know how to push the limits like no one else...
