Shake down round 2! D1SC V6 goes 12.100 (update from Nov ...)

Jenn Shaffer
1998, Pontiac Firebird (aka, Firestorm)
RWD
ProCharger D1SC
60 - 1.796
330 - .000 (lol)
1/8th - 7.764
1/8th mph - 90.63
1000 - 10.115
1/4 - 12.100
mph - 114.08

Link to TimeSlip here

Why "shake down round 2"? ... because after the first two passes, we just changed the rear tires.

Went from 28" Hoosier slicks to some warn out "shop loaner" 26" BFGs

First pass - BFGs at 10psi ... because I was too lazy to put more air in them.

60 - 1.866
330 - .000 (lol)
1/8th - 7.875
1/8th mph - 90.04
1000 - 10.247
1/4 - 12.253
mph - 112.93

Now, both passes the previous weekend (different track), the car hazed the entire track and no one gave me a second look. Yes, this thing is pushing oil out the breather and creating a nice cloud behind it.

This time, we had removed the breather and rigged a "coke bottle" catch can. A track official stopped me on the return lane to make sure nothing was broken or seriously leaking. The hose had blown out of the coke bottle. They did a quick review of the track condition and racing resumed.

Second pass ... or lack there of.

I did my burnout and was staging the car when Jason jumped out in front of the car and waved me off because the car was "pouring oil". -- Took it back to the pits and found out the oil dipstick tube had been blown out of the block. Fixed that and strapped the tube down to everything I could find. (There's no EGR on this thing so there's no bolt for it anymore. )

Okay, actual second pass. -- Had some time while I was fixing the dipstick -- BFGs at 15psi.

60 - 1.796
330 - .000 (lol)
1/8th - 7.764
1/8th mph - 90.63
1000 - 10.115
1/4 - 12.100
mph - 114.08

Again, the car hazed the track. I was happy with the pass so I just went back to the pits... Where I was informed that the car hadn't just hazed this time. Opened the hood to find out the catch can was GONE.

What we learned:

1) This thing has some major crank case pressure issues right now (at 10psi). I'm looking into (a) a better catch can setup, (b) a vaccum pump setup to solve the problem.

2) I've maxed out the factory MAF - Gotta get that replaced/rigged up, figured out.

3) This stock 2000-2400 stall sucks... stock 3.23s suck.

/end overall good day

Additional ... - New best!

*update
We also found out that the low/reverse clutches in the trans were shot. That has been fixed, the car is now sporting an ATI Treemaster converter, the boost has been upped to ... not really sure, but we're going to max a D1SC if the numbers are correct. - The car has been waiting for tuning for a while now, little things keep coming up.

Good to hear another f-body can do low 12s on 42.5lb injectors. Mine are maxed out which sucks because I can barely utilize my boost controller.

I've got a 3200stall and 3.73 gears and love it. Always keeps the turbo ready to kick in at full speed.

Welcome to the world of maxing out the stock MAF. If I find a translator for myself and an extra one I'll let you know, but I've been looking for quite some time now to no avail.

What's really funny about maxing the MAF is that we were not maxing the 42# injectors. I tossed a Z06 MAF on the car and we finally got the Duty Cycle to hit 108%.

I am currently working with a shop to figure out the Z06 MAF ... in a tune able way - but the big problem is going to be figuring out the MAP. I'm not ready to give up the factory PCM.

Brian can you tell me how he's running low 12s and not maxing his injectors but mine are???

What do you need your MAP for anyway?

MAP. Who needs a map? Tune it via the Z06 Maf and you are good go.

Well I do not know what A/F the Procharged bird is running. But do a comparison running your a/f at 11:1 vs 12:1 and see how the duty cycle changes.

How is your PCV system set up? It sounds like you need to block the inlet for the PCV if you are pressurizing the crankcase.

I typically run 2 check valves on forced induction applications. One for the PCV and the other for the Brake Booster.
