My first car was an impala with a 3800 in it and i bought a civic but i realize that isn't going to cut it in the winter so I'm looking to buy a grand prix with the possibility of modding it. Would it be cheaper too buy a base model grand Prix and find a gtp motor for it or am i better off just saving money for a gtp.

Look around at the prices, I have seen SC cars going for all over, not sure what your budget is, but often you can do pretty good getting a SC car first, and I would, the HD 4T65E is worth it to start with. May not hold up to a big list host of mods, but at least it is a good start.

I have seen a 76K mile Buick Park Ave Ultra (SC) sunroof and all for $4K only a couple months ago. don't forget cars like Park Aves, Rivieras, Delta 88 LSS's, Regal GS's, etc. All came with L67's. Some can be had pretty cheap too.

I drove a 92 SC SSEi in Colorado back in 94 or 95 and was surprised how well it ran. I had a 91 LE Bonneville at the time and REALLY wanted to trade up!
