basic '02 9c1 mods
just bought an 02 impala 9c1 a couple days ago. 120k mi. what are some mods i can put on to increase hp and fuel econ., without burning a hole in my pocket? im a college kid, so I dont have a lot of cash to throw around. I was thinking about getting an intake, maybe a TB spacer, and maybe some exhaust work? what would be some good, not-too-pricey options? thanks.

Down pipe with U-bend delete(W-BodyStore), FWI. NGK tr55 plugs, new wires, new fuel filter, new PCV,coolant flush with new thermostat.Trans fluid change with new filter and inspect axles and all front end parts. Most of your suspension parts are well built(being 9c1) but bushings, tie rods, ball joints and hubs at that mileage should be checked and replaced if needed
skip the TB spacer, its a complete waste.

wow. thanks! I completely forgot about checking some of those things. so the TB spacer is just a gimmick? I was kind of skeptical of the supposed "22 hp" gains and such that were advertised. but anyway thanks for your help

i forgot to ask, how much should i expect to spend on the welding, with the downpipe and the U bend eliminator? would a bolt-on downpipe be worth the extra cost?

Rent a welder, around here $40 gets you 24 hours. Most shops wanted to $50 to do ONE weld on my exhaust. I rented a welder and welded the one thing, then welded on my tip, new hangers, etc etc and whatever else I could get my hands on because welding is too much fun. Granted the know how on welding is necessary. Bolt in U bend delete is a better option though.

Tool Rental places, I rent a gas-less mig (yeah ig is inert gas, don't ask me) It feeds the wire through the gun. Its not a stick welder. Just look for tool rental in the phone book. Ask your dad what type of welding he can do, maybe he can only do stick or tig.
