somebody help please

i have got a problem. when i crank the motor i get a knocking sound near the top of the motor after it has been running about a minute and the sound stops when i get up to speed.
this just started a few days ago. the only changes to the car from factory happened a week ago when my alternator finally died. my car lost total power driving down the road three times in the process i had installed a high output alternator and upgraded the ground wires and power wires. now i hear the sound i described above. the car is a 2003 grand prix gt. 3.8L N/A with 91,000 miles on it. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Please describe the noise a bit more. You said at the top of the motor?

check your idler's..... just thought i would throw that out there..... I had one go bad once after I took the belt off.

Could this be a lazy lifter per chance? Mine ticks when the car sits for a while and as soon as i gets goin it stops. I also just thought i throw that out there.
