Help me build my engine!
Saying hi here from Edmonton, Canada.
Going to get right to business. I'm re-building a 87 3.8 FWD SFI engine and need some help squeezing a few more horses from it. Done a lot of searching but can't find much info on these engines. Anyway I want to get 250 tq and 200 hp out of it naturally aspirated. Not looking to turbo or supercharge it. Car will be used strictly on the street as a weekend fun car. So here is where I'm at:
- Rebuild 87 3.8 FWD
- Bored 20 over
- Resized Rods
- 20 over pistons
- polished crank
- New Oil Pump, Bearings, Chrome Rings, Timing Chain, etc.
Future plans include:
- Gasket Port Match Intake/Exhaust Manifolds
- Port head
- I'm using 2 front manifolds and running a true dual exhaust
- 3 angle valve job
- CAI
- I'm going to use the stock SFI system (unless you guys have a better idea)
Right now I'm at the assembly stage but before I begin I want to know what else you guys think I can do.
Should I get the block milled? Heads shaved to increase CR? Cam (Keep in mind car is for the street)? Bigger TB? Anything you guys can think about to get me to my goal 250tq/200hp.
Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW car is going to be mated to a 4 speed manual transmission.
Thanks in advance.
Alex.

You'll need to be able to tune the factory computer for sure. I might be able to, have to know the PCM and broadcast code on the ECM for the PROM to know what I can/can't do.

i would do a mild cam, mild port work, and increase compression some (which ever way you prefer block or heads) headers. um and a good tune on 93.

A mild n/a cam, head work, and a slightly increased CR should do 200/250 no problem. Browse intense's site for a n/a cam, they're pretty popular. There is a RWD camaro on this site running 12s on a stage 2 n/a cam.

are the newer 3800 heads able to bolt on and worth it? In the past Buick continually improved the heads, so newer is usually the better choice.

i believe in 99 the coolant passages in the heads were changed to keep the heads from overheating and cracking. after that i have no clue, and yes they will bolt up.

I know other heads don't work. As for the cam. What's a good mild cam #'s?

i had the s1x na cam from intense and it was a good cam, what really made the cam come alive is when i put headers and open the intake side of the heads so that there was no overhang on the heads and man did that thing come alive above 4k i loved it!
