Please don't be what I think it is...

Well, so much for modding this car, all of my mod money has been going to keeping it together! Anyways... My car started making a noise after I changed the oil. It sounds like a bunch of pebbles inside my engine. Now, I don't THINK that's what bad bearings sound like (from what I've heard), but then again, I don't know what else it can be. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side, and it sounds like pebbles in the engine. It sounds like it goes away when I bring it above 3000 rpm, but before that it's there. It's not loud at all, in fact you have to have the radio off and the air off as well to hear it. My car was fully warmed up and it runs the same way it usually does. Any ideas?

BTW, my car has a FWI, so my next guess would be hearing valve noise more clearly...

:edit:
Tried to get a video, but my phone wouldn't pick up the sound well enough...

That's a tough one. If you know someone at a repair place, might run it past them as see what they say?

I can run it by Intense later in the week to see what they think. I've been meaning to stop by to have a shift kit installed, so that's a good excuse...

that sounds like lifter noise. Does the noise get faster as you bring the rpms up and then go away or does it just go away?

It fades away once you bring the RPMs up...

That wouldn't be a rod bearing.

Thanks Boosty, I was hoping you'd reply to my thread You put my mind at ease a bit...

Ok, I'm almost positive now it's not coming from the engine. I can't hear it at all in the engine bay, but I don't have a stethoscope (yet) to make positive. It's not rhythmic at all, either. It sounds exactly like a bunch of pebbles rolling around in a can, though a bit more muffled. It's not loud at all; I can't even hear it with the air turned on. I don't know... I'm confused at what this might be. Could it be the heater core? Could it be something inside the transmission? (remember, it happens in neutral too)? I'm still not ruling out the cat, but for crying out loud, I only have 98k miles on the thing... But then again, I do have that P0420 code that I always thought was false... I'm planning on going to Intense this week to figure out what this is.

Yeah.. a low efficiency cat code shouldn't exist unless you swapped your cat to a magnaflow that we know give the 00+'s a hard time because they don't meet the pcm's expectations.

Probably the honeycomb of your cat breaking apart and rattling around.
