Up n running

I finally got my 96 firebird up and running this weekend after months of piddling around.

Using the 'Intense' big valves, Comp 210/220 @ .050 cam ported heads, 26915 springs and a basic rering it sounds pretty decent. I need to run the remainder of the bad gas out (had to change the fuel pump too).

I also picked up a friend's BMR torque arm and dropped in some Eiback springs.

I'll have to see how it does at the track in a few weeks then spray the wee out of it.

So I ran into a snag. After running for a little while it developed a miss. At first I figured it was bad gas but then it got really bad. As in two holes not firing. Checked ignition and all was good there. Holes 1 and 2 leaking compression. I got to thinking about the cam I put in there and the valve train. Stock length valves, springs installed .080-.100 from coil bind, stock lifters and stock pushrods. The only difference there was the Comp cam. I guess it was ground with a slightly bigger base circle because I pulled the VC off and backed off the rockers on hole#1 to find that there was .080 preload on the lifter. Way too much. I figure that when the lifter finally pumped up with oil it was holding the valve open slightly and also putting the spring right against coil bind. This was seen in hole#2 where I found a broken valve spring. I put in a set of 6.950 pushrods (against stock 7.029) and I still have about .010-.015 preload on the lifter. Much better. I'll fire it back up tomorrow to see how it all fares.

Much mo betta now.

Car purrs like stock and the little stall converter gets up to about 2400 before anihilating the tires. I managed to cover the truck behind me in little black rubber pebbles.
