Car not starting well...

Have to continually crank in order to turn the engine over. Once it starts I can smell fuel.

Checked starter and front O2. Has a new battery and alternator.

So I think that the problem has been narrowed down to a leaky fuel injector, warped UIM, or other fuel system problem.

Anyone have a similar problem? What's the best way to troubleshoot a leaky injector? Bad fuel pump?

Thanks!

Being that you smell fuel, pull the vacuum fitting off the fuel pressure regulator and look for any fuel in the vacuum line or the fitting of the FPR. There should be no fuel present. If there is, please get a new FPR asap. This type of problem has been known to cause exploding upper intakes.

If no fuel is found in the line or FPR, visually inspect the injectors for any signs of external leakage.

I think the best way to spot a leaky injector is if there is fuel gunk built up around the injector connection or on the fuel rails themselves.

Haven't counted how many cranks, but when it does start it sputters to life. It runs fine after starting (city, freeway, WOT). The funny thing was that after setting in my garage without starting for a few days it turned right over.

No codes other than a P0420 that I now get with my new high flow cat.

I'll check the FPR tonight. Thanks!

you're smelling fuel because it is flooding the engine and not being burned. start eliminating the problem from there...you have fuel going to the engine so its not a fuel issue. do you have spark? take off a plug boot, and have someone crank the car as you look for a spark inside the boot...try that and see what happens

Just a thought...

A bad ECT or connection there may also cause the problem you are describing.
