problems with powersteering, hard to turn left but easy to turn right...please help

my power steering started acting up last night. its really hard to turn left as if the pump went but turning right feels completely normal. every once in a while it will turn left just fine but then go back to being really hard to turn.

my question is do you think its the power steering pump or the rack and pinion? their both kind of expensive so i dont really wanna replace both if i dont have too. also how hard is it to replace? do i have to drop the rear cradle or can i get to it from under the car without removing anything?

if anybody has any help it would be greatly appreciated because this is my daily driver

Double check for a recall on that. There is a bearing in the intermediate shaft that causes those symptoms.

I had to replace my whole PS rack, and I had similar symptoms to what you describe.

Ross is spot on, I've done a bunch of racks for hard steer in one direction.
Joe, the recall was for a total loss of steering when the lower pinion bearing fails and allows the rack to disengage from the pinion.

Then your recall may have been different than mine. I don't have the notice any longer, but it was for difficult to steer in one direction. After they did the recall work, the problem went away. I have a different car than you guys do, and that could easily change things.

someone posted on clubgp that the recall for gp's was for early 97's only and mine is a 2000 gtp. should i just replace the rack or should i do the pump also while im at it. i plan on getting it from Ed anyways so its not too pricy.

also, how hard is it to replace? do i need to drop the rear cradle or is their enough room to get it out? anything i need to look out for when replaceing it? i know i need an alignment afterwards...

I've never replaced the P/S rack, but I did just remove the motor from my GP and looking at the available room (not much), you'll either have to loosen the front and drop the rear of the cradle or pull the engine loose and move it forward a bit have enough room to get the rack out.

I'm sure someone will chime in that's done this ....

It's the rack. The seals start to bypass, especially when cold, and gives a hard steer or notchy steer in one or sometimes both directions.

Hard/no-steering to right

Hello late reply, my Gp has hard steering to the right, started other morning, then went away after I jacked car up and turned wheel <>, but driving steering didn't feel right on R turns, now its gone again. called a dealer and they said going by vin that the steering recall work was done in 2003, something to do with bearing(s). Anyway should I go straight for the Rack & Pinion replacement or what test can I do to see if it's something else.
Thanks
EDIT: water has been leaking out plastic elbow was hoping it just got on steering mech and messed it up for a minute. but that's looking like wishful thinking.
