Coolers! Which way is better?

I bought a 98GTP($750) a few months back that had the transmission rebuilt by a top notch shop($2800) 31, yes 31 miles before the motor shot a rod threw the pan and I am just now swapping the motor(l32) and noticed what I thought was odd... They installed a generic cooler and cut the lines to the radiator thus only using the aftermarket cooler. I also have a 2000 GPGT that when I replaced the trans in that with a junkyard one I installed a cooler that was specifically made for the GPs and it was to be ran in line with the radiator which I did. I'm just curious how you guys run yours and which way is better? And if it makes any difference I'll be running a 160* tstat...
