98 Intrigue Won't Start

Hey guys.

I tried searching but couldn't find anything. I could really use some help.

I have a 98 Intrigue with the 3800 series 2 engine. It has about 167k on it but it has always run great up until last weekend. We were on our way into town. I was at a stop light and when I went to pull away, the car missed a few times. When we went to leave town, after the car had sat for about an hour and a half, the car was running quite rough. The next morning my wife drove it to work (still running rough) and that afternoon it wouldn't start. So far, I have eliminated the fuel system, the ignition module, and the coils. All cylinders are running 170-180 psi except #2 which is at 150. The timing chain is fine, I tore it down thinking that was the problem .

It will fire and I actually had it running for about a second the other day, but very rough. It acts like it has a major timing problem. I tried some starting fluid just to eliminate the fuel system and got a fireball out of the throttle body for my trouble.

I rented an Actron code reader and pulled these codes:
P0301 is Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected (no kidding )
P0440 is Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction (possible fuel cap [gas cap] loose/off)
P1665 is EVAP Vent Valve Solenoid Control Circuit (1998)

I am at a loss now. Any help anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Here's several things that should be done when a car won't start.

Check for spark from all three coils.
Check fuel pressure.
Check for fuel injector pulse.

Try unplugging the MAF sensor.
Try unplugging the cam sensor.

Clean the connections at the battery.
Check voltage at the battery while cranking.

Let us know what you find or if you need any help with any of the above items.

Yes. Nice bright blue strong spark.

There is pressure. I don't know how much. It should start just from spraying starter fluid into the throttle body shouldn't it?

I will try this as soon as I get the timing cover put back on.

I will check this when I get it back together too, but it cranks over just as fast as ever.

Thanks for the advice. Should I get the fuel pressure test kit and noid lights? I would have to buy them. I will if I need to though.

You may end up needing the fuel press gauge and noids but first get it back together and check the MAF. What you're describing could be a MAF.

OK, finally got it back together. I tried unplugging the MAF and cam sensors at the same time, and each individually and it still won't start. It fires occasionally, but thats about it. What should I do next?

Thanks for the help. This is pretty frustrating.

I know it's frustrating - I repair cars for a living!
Check your fuel pressure next, you'll need a gauge.

Fuel pressure is 44psi. I also replaced the coolant temp sensor. Someone told me that could affect it, but that didn't make any difference either.

What do I do next?

Thanks again

Check for fuel injector pulse. If you don't have a noid light then you can use a #194 light bulb.

Should have asked sooner but have you checked all the fuses?

no start intrigue

Was there ever any excess smoke from exhaust(sometimes we don't see it)? Reason I ask is the 95 thru 99 NA3800's had a problem with the upper intake(black plastic plenums) rotting thru to a coolant passage where the egr pipe comes thru. This condition will flood the intake cavaties and sometimes the entire engine with coolant causing missfire and sometimes all the way to hydralic lock-up. The easiest way to fine this condition is to pull the throttle screen and look inside the bore(open the throttle plate). On the bottom side there is the egr pipe sticking out around 1/4". If you pressure test the cooling system and watch this area and coolant seeps or blows out, you need a new plenum. If not, the problem is elsewhere. Usually there is a slight to severe coolant lose with this condition.

Good luck, Jake L.
