How to correctly check the fluid level?

How do you correctly check the fluid level on a 99 Regal GS. Some cars its you put them in neutral, some park, my fiero said drive for 30 mins then check... how do I do it!?

get the tranny fluid warm, then park it while running, put trans in park and check the fluid

Not sure I want to drive it, can I let it run a bit, shift through PRND32 (can't get to one 1) and then check it?

yes, let your car idle until the engine is up to temp (fully), that should get your trans somewhat warm warm enough to tell if it's ok

I think it was over-filled before but I changed out my trans-cooler lines and a bunch drained out so hopefully I am back down near where I should be.
