Unhappy Knocking engine noise v6 3.8l ??

Hi,
I have a 2000 Ford Mustang v6 3.8L, i've been hearing this knocking/rattling noise all the time for a day or two now. I checked my oil dipstick, and it only had about half a qt or less of oil. I added oil and the noise went away for the most part. Until I hit the high RPMS and the noise is back again..probably rod knocking from melted bearings ?

any ideas?
Thanks!

Have you checked oil pressure? If it is low it could be a good indicator of a spun bearing. If oil pressure is good then there may a lifter issue.

I think that 3.8l Ford motor is fubar sir. Engine lubrication(amongst other things) was not really well planned out or realized.
The fwd Taurus with those motors used to drop like flies in most shops with knocking engines.

I'm going to say lifter too, since the noise went away with the added oil.

These Ford 3.8's are notorious for intake gasket leaks. Maybe it has contaminated the oil and spun a bearing or killed a lifter. Either way you need to tear it down.
