Cool Custom brake upgrade C5 front and GXP rear?

The goal is to go with 12" all the way around with aluminum calipers and keeping the 16" wheels.

Looking to do some sort of brake upgrade to the car when the brakes are ready to be replaced. I dont need 13" rotors from the GXP

I learned that the C5 and f-body will bolt up to the front and that the GXP rears will also work.

The C5 uses smaller pistons than the fbody that is a plus.

C5 and GXP brake kits are expensive. Has anyone tried to do this with any luck? What issues did you run into?

No one has that combo installed yet that I know of. Steven, RidinOnChrome, has F-body front and is about to install GXP rear, but I don't think he's done it yet.

The C5 does use smaller pistons, but in most cases it's not a plus. Maintaining the same master cylinder would require much higher foot pressure to obtain the same result. The Camaro or Firebird caliper has an identical piston swept area as the W body piston, but is aluminum and 2 piston, so no change in foot pressure.

I am about to embark in the same process but I have Z06 calipers and the 12.7 rotors. To accommodate the larger rotors I need to extend the caliper out thus changing the mounting bracket.

Now do the C5 calipers have the same mounting bracket as the GXP mounting bracket or is there an after market bracket I can use to mount these calipers?

We've done testing on them all...

The C5 caliper is not compatible with the F Body bracket and the C5 bracket will barely clear the stock 10.9" rotors so using the C5 calipers is going to require some modification.

The volume of the F body caliper is larger than the W Body and results in longer pedal travel before the caliper engages. This is why people commonly complain of a long pedal with the F body upgrade. The C5 caliper volume is smaller and pedal travel is improved over the F body.

The other nice thing about the C5 calipers is that they are pressure cast which makes them exponentially more resistant to deflection than the F body calipers. That's good news for anyone that does repeated, heavy braking.

The rotors on my car now are the 12” rotors in reality they are 11.X.

I have new 12.7" rotors and brackets that came with the C5 calipers. I am going to do a test fit tonight if the C5 brackets don't fit I will try GXP caliper bracket but I want to make sure that the GXP(PBR) calipers are the same size as the C5(PBR) calipers.

They look the same but I am still searching for the dimensions of the calipers to verify the bolt patterns.

Let me save you some time Joe.

Unless your Grand Prix has the Comp G package with the WS6 option package you're running 11.7" rotors stock.

The C5 caliper/ bracket will barely clear the 97' - 03' 10.9" GP rotors. Despite being designed for a 12.7" rotor the ears on the knuckle of the Corvette come out further than the Grand Prix so the caliper bracket is significantly shorter then the equivilent F Body caliper/ bracket.

The C5/ GXP calipers share only concept similarities. They are both PBR dual piston calipers. The GXPs are a lighter duty than the C5's. They don't interchange caliper brackets and other than sharing a common rotor size, share no other similarities.

Yep that is correct. Also the bolt pattern on the rotors is 5x114 not 5X115

I had the same idea for my setup which I would like to do.

Front:
C5 calipers
F-body brackets
F-body brake pads
2000+ 12" Impala Rotors

Rear
GXP calipers
GXP brackets
GXP 12" Rotors

Other:
GXP Brake petal (upgrade from the stock W-body petal)
Steel braided brake hoses

I hope with the following items I have good braking and not too much lose in brake pressure.
